All materials mentioned here are those that I use and feel comfortable working with, but you can of course bring also different materials if your already have them.

Colors

These are the colors I use. Again, you donโ€™t have to buy exactly those. I recommend trying to have a warm and cold hue of all of them.

Must haves in my palette are Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Ultramarin, Cobalt Blue. Additional some yellow and reds and effect colors like Lavender.

Palette with watercolor paints

Here is a list of my colors by brand:

Schmincke Horadam

  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Cadmium Red Light
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Cobalt Blue Hue 1
  • Ultramarine Blue 2
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Raw Umber 3
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Cobalt Turquoise
  • Ultramarine Violet

Daniel Smith

  • Pyrrol Orange
  • Lavender
  • Neutral Tint
  • Lunar Black

Winsor & Newton Professional

  • Cobalt Green
1 optionally, but more expensive: Cobalt Blue
2 or French Ultramarine
3 I recommend the Schmincke version, because it's less green than that of other brands

Paper

I recommend using (at least) 300g cotton paper.

Personally I use mostly Fabriano Artistico Grana Fina (cold pressed) or Arches for rough textures. Other top brands should be fine, too. You can get them as loose sheets, which we can divide in smaller ones (for the workshop I reccomend not to paint bigger than quater sheet - 28 x 38cm / 11 x 15โ€ณ) on demand, or just get a watercolor pad in roughly the same mentioned size.

Brushes

I normally paint almost everything with these three brushes:

  • One medium sized mop brush that can take a lot of water for big washes. For example the Tintoretto Aquasoft (8) one from the foto.
  • Two round brushes in different sizes. For example Escoda Perla (12, 16).For smaller washes and then details. For that it's necessary that they have still a nice tip.

Most other good quality brushes are fine as well.
